Setting up Skype 2 in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)
By soUPERMan
If you are reading this you probably have installed Ubuntu 9.10 codename: Karmic Koala, and has either considered or already installed Skype (mostly version 2.0 as found in the ubuntu repositories) or version 2.1 from www.skype.com. If not, then i suggest you do so. Here's how:
Installing skype
There are two ways of which you can install skype on Ubuntu 9.10. You can use the official ubuntu repositories or you can download a .deb package off the skype website.
- Using the repositories
You can get skype from the ubuntu repositories through your package manager. Go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager then enter your password (if you have administrative privileges), in the search box type, "skype" without the quotes. A package called skype will appear, right-click it and select Mark for installation. Click on Apply. Wait for the installation to complete then close the windows and you will have skype on your Menu list in the Applications > Internet.
- Downloading directly from the website
Go to http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/linux/choose/
then select the link: Ubuntu 8.10+ 32-bit or Ubuntu 8.10+ 64-bit, download the file, double-click on it to install.
Most issues after installing skype is getting the audio to work, this has been a problem for me constantly as i have been using linux. But it's not a complicated procedure.
Start skype, then log in to your account. If you don't have an account you can create one.
My Skype Settings
If you are having problems with audio is skype, you might want to check your settings. In skype go to the left-bottom corner of your window and click the Main menu > Options or just press Ctrl+O and the options menu will pop up.
Basically, you need to go to Sound Devices and adjust the settings there. Im not promising that it will work with my settings but for me, this is what worked. If it doesnt keep trying, something will work.
PS: I am using the version found on the skype website.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask here, just leave a comment and i'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Try and change the microphone settings to others and try again, hopefully one will work. If not write to me i'll try and look for another solution.
Thanks for reading.
Great info here. But Pulse Audio is always giving me problems. Might work now, but won't work for the next upgrade. Damn! :(
You you saved me dude! I always used to switch to windows to make skype call and now it is working. The audio setting was set to Default setting and now I set it to Pulse and it is working perfectly. Thank you very much.
@Zelalem - No problem, glad the article helped
